The Saints placed the franchise tag on Drew Brees earlier this year, but the quarterback has yet to sign it, which means he's technically unsigned. It also means he's not getting paid right now, and considering his last contract was worth only $60 million, Brees needs to start earning a paycheck.
Drew Brees Can Spend His Offseason Making Sandwiches
So of course he’s going to open a Jimmy Johns sandwich shop in New Orleans. WWL reports Brees needed permission from the New Orleans City Council to use an old house, not zoned for commercial use, as the location for his Jimmy Johns shop.
Opponents complained the rules should be upheld even though it is Drew Brees asking for the exception.
“This is a fast food outlet, and it is in a B1 neighborhood,” one neighbor complained. “No, I guess they don’t have hamburgers, but neither does Quiznos. This is like Quiznos, it’s like Subways.”
But this is Louisiana and winning a Super Bowl means you are above the law*. Thus, the City Council agreed and unanimously passed the proposal.
*Not sure if that’s totally accurate.
