Jake Ballard Waived/Failed Physical By New York Giants

The New York Giants had a surprise cut on Monday, announcing that tight end Jake Ballard, who tore his ACL in the Giants' Super Bowl run earlier this year, has been waived/failed physical. In his place, defensive tackle Rocky Bernard was signed.

The move was designed as waived/failed physical which means while on the waiver wire every other NFL team will have an opportunity to claim him. It doesn’t mean that Ballard is gone from New York, though. If no one claims him and he clears waivers, the Giants could bring him back and place him on injured reserve.

The ACL injury is one of the issues but he also had micro fracture surgery. The injury was suffered last February during the Super Bowl and ACLs can take anywhere from 9-12 months to heal. As we noted earlier this year, Ballard was potentially going to miss significant time anyway.

The timing of the injury wasn’t great for Ballard, who looked like he was coming into his own last season in New York. He finished the season with 38 receptions for 604 yards in 13 starts.
