James Jones Trade Rumors: Packers WR On The Block

Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones is said to be on the trading block. Which teams could be interested in an extra set of hands?

Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones could be on the trade block. Lance Zierlein of the Houston Chronicle buried that nugget in the bottom of a Wednesday look at the Houston Texans' wide receiver situation. If the report is indeed true, and the Chronicle is a reliable source on these things, it could shake things up in an otherwise quiet offseason.

Jones, 28, has two years left on his contract with the Packers, a very reasonable deal that few teams would find prohibitive. Jones is due $2.3 million in base salary this season with another $200,000 roster bonus. In 2013, Jones is due $2.95 million with another $200,000 roster bonus.

Green Bay is loaded at wide receiver. Jordy Nelson and Greg Jennings sit atop the depth chart, and led the team in catches last season. Right behind them was tight end Jermichael Finley, who signed a two-year contract in February. The 37-year-old Donald Driver re-signed at the end of May, inking a one-year deal.

Jones is buried on the depth chart, his role limited to that of a possession receiver. He was fourth on the team last season with 38 receptions and seven touchdowns. He finished the season with 635 yards.

Besides being hidden on the depth chart, dropped passes have hurt Jones’ reputation. He dropped six last season, a year after making a high-profile Super Bowl drop. Despite that, he did manage to catch more than 69 percent of the passes thrown his way. Jones had a 62 percent catch rate the year before that.

Zierlein mentions the Jones' trade rumors as one possibility for adding depth to the Texans' roster. Paired with Andre Johnson, Jones could be a very effective part of that offense.

Houston would likely not be the only team interested in Jones. Miami, St. Louis, Cleveland and other teams could all use help at the position.
