Texans’ Gary Kubiak, Rick Smith Receive Contract Extensions

The Texans made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history last season and the two men at the top of the organization have been rewarded for it.

The Houston Texans had a breakout year in 2011 making the playoffs for the first time in franchise history and subsequently winning their first playoff game in franchise history. For that, the two men responsible for the Texans' rise have been given contract extensions.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, both head coach Gary Kubiak and GM Rick Smith received contract extensions on Thursday. Both had contracts that were set to expire after the 2012 season. It’s not uncommon for teams to extend coaches or executives to avoid them walking into a lame duck year.

No word on the length of the current extensions.

It’s been a long year for Kubiak, who entered the 2011 season on the hot seat. The Texans had come close to making the playoffs before and it was believed by some that Kubiak needed to make the playoffs to save his job. Ten wins later and he did just that.

Smith, meanwhile, has constructed one of the most talented rosters in the league with the gem of his roster being undrafted free agent Arian Foster, who is now one of the best running backs in the game.
