The New England Patriots wrapped up their future in a big way on Friday. Reports surfaced that tight end Rob Gronkowski and the Patriots were working on a contract extension; according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the deal is done. Gronkowski got a six-year extension with $54 million in new money.

Gronkowski had two years remaining on his current deal with base salaries of $490,000 in 2012 and $575,000 in 2013. Assuming the report is accurate, a six-year extension would put him under contract in New England for the next eight seasons.
This is a win-win for Gronkowski and the Patriots. His new contract pays him in the neighborhood of $7 million per year which is in line with what the top tight ends are making. For Gronkowski, it’s a lot more money on top of his previous contract. For the Patriots, they lock up one of the best tight ends in the game for years to come.
