Long after and far removed from the hype of the NFL Draft, the NFL Supplemental Draft takes place with very little fanfare. 2012’s edition happens Thursday, July 12.

The purpose of the NFL Supplemental Draft is to provide a second path to the NFL for draft-eligible players who became ineligible for that year’s NFL Draft, and to afford teams an opportunity to select them. Each Supplemental Draft pick comes with a stiff price, however: if a team selects a player in the Supplemental Draft, it must forfeit its assigned pick in the next year’s NFL Draft in the same round.

The only player taken in the 2011 NFL Supplemental Draft was Terrelle Pryor, whom the Oakland Raiders snagged with a third-round pick; the Raiders forfeited the 15th pick in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft as a result.

Bernie Kosar, Brian Bosworth, Cris Carter and Steve Walsh were all taken in the NFL Supplemental Draft, but few players of consequence have been selected by NFL teams since rules changed in 1993 to restrict eligibility only to NFL Draft-eligible players who intended to attend college in the fall but were prevented from doing so.

The 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft will begin at 1 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, July 12. NFL.com will have details of the picks as they are made -- if they are made. Former Baylor player Josh Gordon, who left the team after the 2010 season due to a failed drug test, is the only player eligible and receiving substantial buzz.
