‘Cam Newton Drive’ Shot Down, Residents Mildly Inconvenienced

Cam Newton is a phenomenal athlete and an exciting football player. He’s won the Heisman Trophy and was named NFL Rookie of the Year, and he holds the record for most rushing touchdowns in a single season by a quarterback. However, he will not yet have a street named after him in Fulton County, Ga.

Johnny Edwards of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that a proposal to rename a street in south Fulton “Cam Newton Drive” has been shot down by current residents of the street.

At a public hearing last week, residents of Scarborough Road argued against renaming the street after the Carolina Panthers quarterback. Their argument was twofold:

- Newton is just 23 and has not yet done enough to warrant an entire street named after him;

- It will cost us money to have our records changed.

To the second point: lol what. I don’t think I’ve ever moved anywhere and had to change my address and someone was like, “That’ll be five bucks, please.” They have change-of-address forms at the post office and everything! Maybe these residents mean they’ll be out a stamp or something? Most services offer “on-line” and “paper-less” services to update your records. It’s pretty neat!

As for their other point, that is at least a bit more understandable. You want to make sure Newton doesn’t go on some sort of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson-esque automotive spree while all hopped up on Jupiter oil or something a few years down the line.

On the other hand, who among us didn’t want a street named after us when we were 23? Heck, I still want a street named after me. But I guess for now, I’ll have to hang onto my plans for the “Bill Hanstock Memorial Super-Awesome Thoroughfare.” Oh, well. Dare to dream.
