The New York Jets are parting ways with defensive stalwart Jim Leonhard. Rich Cimini of ESPN New York reported late Wednesday night that the team would not re-sign the veteran safety, a favorite of head coach Rex Ryan.

Injuries have taken a heavy toll on the 29-year-old. He landed on injured reserve in December last season after tearing the patellar tendon in his right knee. He broke his tibia late in the 2010 season.

Leonhard has been a staple of Ryan's defense over this three-year tenure as head coach of the Jets. Ryan brought Leonhard from Baltimore after the 2008 season. The Jets signed free agents Yeremiah Bell and LaRon Landry earlier in the spring to shore up the depth chart.

For his part, Leonhard said that he is healthy and “ready to go,” expressing confidence that he could catch on with another team.
