Ryan Tannehill ‘Not In The Running’ For Dolphins QB Job

Miami Dolphins first-round pick Ryan Tannehill is expected to start the season as the team’s third quarterback.

The Miami Dolphins do not believe that rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill is ready for a starting job, or even the primary backup job. A recent report from the Palm Beach Post pointed to the first-round pick's mistakes in spring OTAs and minicamp as the primary reason that he will have to work his way back up the depth chart.

Tannehill, according to the report, struggled when throwing into traffic. The coaching staff in Miami has maintained a tough-on-turnovers policy, which makes Tannehill's throws into crowded areas of the field a problem. He will likely start the season as the third quarterback on the Dolphins' depth chart, behind David Garrard and Matt Moore.

Rookie quarterbacks have a difficult transition, so news that Tannehill has been less than flawless should be no surprise. Nevertheless, seeing his name at the third spot on the chart is disconcerting, especially since he was the eighth overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. The other three quarterbacks picked in the first round, including Cleveland's Brandon Weeden, are all expected to start when the season opens in September. Tannehill should also have some grasp of offensive coordinator Mike Sherman's offense, having played for Sherman at Texas A&M.

David Garrard looks like the favorite to start for the Dolphins, though Matt Moore could challenge him during the preseason.
