New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora could be seeing plenty of Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III this season. However, Umenyiora will not be referring to the rookie quarterback by his nickname, RGIII.
Osi Umenyiora Has No Idea Who ‘This RG3 Guy’ Is
Nicknames, the 30-year-old veteran told the New York Post, have to be earned.
“Who is this RG3 guy you guys keep talking about?” Umenyiora said. “You talking about Bob Griffin? You guys are giving him a cool nickname already and everything. When he does anything in the NFL we’re gonna call him RG3. Right now he’s Bob Griffin.”
You see the flaw in his logic here, I assume? By calling him Bob, Umenyiora is using a nickname for Griffin. Maybe the key here is his interpretation of “cool” nicknames, whereas Bob is somehow less dignified than RGIII. I suspect more than a few Bobs would take issue with that.
Ironically enough, in the very same article, Umenyiora points out Jets' head coach Rex Ryan having learned his lesson about trash talking. No doubt RGIII is gearing up to impart the same lesson on Osi.
