Saints Player Suspended By NFL, But Not For Bounties

Saints linebacker Lawrence Wilson was suspended one game and fined two game checks for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

A New Orleans Saints player has been suspended, but it’s not related to the bounty scandal. Larry Holder of CBS Sports reports Saints linebacker Lawrence Wilson, a 2011 sixth round pick, has been suspended for the first game of the season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Wilson will also be fined two game checks.

Wilson’s rookie season was a little rocky with a November arrest for marijuana possession. Wilson, a former Panther, was pulled over for speeding during Carolina’s bye week. After smelling it in the car, the officer searched the vehicle and found 11 grams of marijuana.

It’s never okay to break the law, but for a player on the fringe of the roster, it’s even worse. Wilson will have to make the Saints’ 53-man roster first, probably through special teams.

This isn’t the worst news of the offseason for the Saints, who have gone through the bounty scandal the past few months, but it can’t be classified as good news.
