Ryan Mathews, Antonio Gates Expected To Play Week 3 For Chargers
Mathews told the Union-Tribune:
Gates suffered a rib injury on Sept. 10 in the Chargers’ season opener that left him sidelined last week. He was a limited participant on Wednesday, though head coach Norv Turner said he “looked good.” How his body reacts to Wednesday’s practice will determine his participation on Thursday.

According to a tweet from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews is unlikely to play against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
Mathews practiced this week but it looks like he hasn’t recovered from his collarbone injury enough to see the field on Sunday.

Most figured Mathews was facing four-to-six weeks before returning to the field. It has now been five weeks, so it is pretty apparent he is on schedule to return sooner rather than later. Chargers head coach Norv Turner has said Mathews will play as soon as he feels up to it physically, and him putting on pads and a helmet on Thursday can only mean good things moving forward.

Head coach Norv Turner said that there was no setback to his recovery and he expects the progression to continue. Mathews was held to mental reps only and did not participate in any team drills.
“It’s just the plan we have,” said Turner. “He worked pretty hard to the side. He just didn’t practice. We’ll get him out there as soon as we can.”
