Shawne Merriman will be released on Monday by the Buffalo Bills, according to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer.

The linebacker was entering his second season with the Bills, after appearing in just five games for them during the 2011 season. In those contests, Merriman only made nine tackles and recorded just one sack.

Many reports early in the offseason stated that Merriman was ready to have a bounce-back year, but apparently that wasn’t the case in Buffalo’s eyes.

The 28-year-old once looked to have an extremely bright career when he was a member of the San Diego Chargers. Unfortunately, Merriman was suspended for violating the NFL's steroid policy back in 2006, which signaled his gradual descent.

Despite playing well that campaign and in 2007, Merriman became ravaged by injuries and never truly regained his original form that saw him rack up 39.5 sacks in his first three seasons.

Since the 2007 season, Merriman has only played in 23 games.
