More To The Story Of Jonathan Fanene’s Release From Patriots

The New England Patriots released defensive tackle Jonathan Fanene on Tuesday, raising more than a few eyebrows in NFL circles.

Now, it appears the reasons behind the release are starting to come into focus. According to Ross Tucker, Fanene was cut because he didn’t tell the team about a physical condition. Tucker also says it’s likely that New England will try to recoup the $3.85 million signing bonus it agreed to in the offseason.

The Patriots released Fanene with the designation of “failure to disclose physical condition”, a new option implemented by the NFL this year.

Head coach Bill Belichick had little to say on the matter before practice on Wednesday morning, per ESPN.

“It just didnt work out,” Belichick said, repeating remarks on Fanene from Tuesday. “Nothing to add other than that, it just didn’t work out.”

The 30-year-old missed the last 13 practices because of a knee injury that might require arthroscopic surgery. Before signing his contract with New England, Fanene did pass a physical.
