The Pittsburgh Steelers fired special teams coach Al Everest on Thursday, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports. The reason for the move is unknown at this time.

Letting Everest go comes at a time when most coaching jobs are typically safe. The regular season starts in just two weeks.

The Steelers hired Everest in January of 2010, bringing him over from the San Francisco 49ers, where he coached special teams from 2007-2009. The 49ers fired Everest. He spent six seasons as the special teams coach in New Orleans from 2000-2005.

Pittsburgh’s special teams did not allow a single opponent to score on a kick return or punt return last season. According to Football Outisders, the Steelers had a special teams DVOA of 1.7 percent, the ninth-best mark in the NFL.

The Steelers open their season at Denver on Sunday September 9. They continue their preseason schedule with a Saturday night game against the Buffalo Bills.
