It's cut day, and the Giants have begun making roster moves to cut their squad from 75 players to the 53 they need to have for the regular season opener. Prominent names already known to have been cut include Greg Jones, DJ Ware, and sixth-round pick Matt McCants.
NFL Roster Cuts 2012: Greg Jones Among Giants Initial Cuts
Jones, a two-time all-American at Michigan State, played in all 16 games last season and was thrust into the Giants' starting role at middle linebacker last year after an injury to Jonathan Goff, but was replaced by Mark Herzlich as the team moved towards a Super Bowl victory. Ware has been with the Giants since 2007, but this past season was the running back's most prominent, carrying the ball a career-high 46 yards for 163 yards. McCants was the team's sixth-round pick, but the offensive tackle out of UAB did not impress in preseason play.
Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News is keeping a running tally of the 22 moves the team needs to make as the day goes on. Big Blue View is also keeping tabs on cut day.
