The Cleveland Browns released veteran quarterback Seneca Wallace on Friday, according to a report from Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland. Wallace and Colt McCoy had been in a competition to make the roster along with rookie QB Brandon Weeden, but with Wallace set to make $2.4 million and McCoy scheduled to make $540,000 next season Wallace became the odd-man-out.

All three quarterbacks struggled to consistently make plays during the preseason. After the preseason finale on Thursday night against the Chicago Bears, Browns head coach Pat Shurmur noted that "all three quarterbacks played like backups [on Thursday night]," so it's not as if McCoy set himself apart based on production or execution. The Browns open their regular season schedule at home against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 9.
