The Pittsburgh Steelers have made their roster cuts to reach the NFL limit of 53 active players before Friday's deadline. The Steelers got to the 53-man limit by placing rookie linebacker Sean Spence on the injured reserve list and released 20 other players.

Spence, a third-round pick out of Miami, sustained a knee injury in the team's final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers and will miss the 2012 season.

Of these names, Essex and Kapinos stand out as they had spent time with the Steelers organization. Essex had been with Pittsburgh since 2005 and played in 76 games with 28 starts, including all 16 games in 2009. Kapinos had punted in 12 games for the Steelers between the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
