The 49ers announced their 21 cuts to the roster to get it down to the 53-man limit in time for Friday’s deadline. Here is the full list of the players cut:
49ers Roster Cuts: Josh Johnson Among Casualties
Quarterback Josh Johnson
Wide Receivers Chris Owusu, Nathan Palmer and Brett Swain
Tight ends Konrad Reuland and Kyle Nelson
Running back Rock Cartwright
Offensive lineman Al Netter, Derek Hall, Kenny Wiggins and Mike Person
Linebackers Eric Bakhtiari, Kenny Rowe, Wilhoite, Joe Holland, Ikaika Alama-Francis
Safeties Thomas, Colin Jones (trade)
Defensive tackles Tony Jerod-Eddie, Matthew Masifilo
Cornerback Anthony Mosley
The group is headlined by veteran running back Cartwright, whose 11 years of experience wasn't going to get him very far in the crowded 49ers backfield. Johnson was also a slight surprise, and his departure means that the 49ers will open the season with the exact same quarterback depth chart as they did in 2011: Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick and Scott Tolzien.
