NFL Odds For Week 3 Are In

It’s Week 3, and we’re back with all the Week 3 lines, plus picks for each game. But first let’s talk about Thursday Night Football. Does anyone remember the last time we had a good Thursday Night game? Doesn’t anyone else see what’s happening here?

Thursday Night Football is cursed.

The Eagles, the luckiest 2-0 team in decades after rallying twice for 1-point victories, opened as 5.5-point road chalk back on Monday, but a steady stream of Arizona money has the line at -3 or -3.5 at most sportsbooks tracked by OddsShark.com.

”A patchwork O-Line doesn’t give many bettors a lot of comfort, especially if it means less protection for Michael Vick,” said football analysts Jack Randall of OddsShark.com. “And Arizona has quietly won nine of 11 games and have dominated the spread at home lately, going 8-3 ATS.”

Peyton Manning’s weak Monday Night performance has changed some opinions on where the Denver Broncos fit in the NFL pecking order. It also has created some uncertainty for oddsmakers, whose opinions have translated into a wide range of point spreads for Denver’s Week 3 home game against the Houston Texans.

”We have one book at a PK and another holding the Texans as 3-point favorites, which is a significant disparity in opinion this late in the week,” said Jack Randall of OddsShark.com. Other shops have the Texans as 1-point road favorites, but Bovada is so far holding the line at -3 for the Texans.

The Chargers opened as 1.5-point home favorites, according to the Week 3 NFL odds menu at OddsShark.com, against a team they have not beaten in five tries since 1991. But that number had been bet up to -3 by Friday.

The Falcons play on a short week after defeating Denver Monday night, and they have struggled in the role as road underdog, failing to cover in four of their past five games in this situation.

The Raiders have earned a reputation as a tough underdog and a patsy favorite (they lost as chalk last week in Miami). And the Steelers are aware of this fact, having lost two of the past four meetings to Oakland when they were in this situation as a favorite.

”When you add the fact that the Steelers are just 2-8 ATS in their past 10 as a road team, you get another small handicapping factor to consider Oakland here on the Week 3 odds menu,” explained Jeff Grant of Sportsbookreview.com.

In 14 meetings, the Jets own an 11-3 ATS mark, part of the reason they were installed as a 2.5-point road favorite on the Week 3 NFL odds menu at most shops tracked by OddsShark.com.

But there are competing trends at play here in this AFC East battle. The Dolphins have been tough at home (5-1 ATS in past six), while the Jets have been awful on the road (2-8 ATS after their loss in Pittsburgh last week.)

The Titans opened as 3.5-point home underdogs, according to the betting odds for Week 3 at most online shops, as they look to snap an 0-2 ATS mark on the season.

If trends continue, this is the spot for Tennessee to do it. Detroit is 0-6 ATS in its past six road games. And the OVER is also seeing considerable action, given Detroit’s penchant for road scoring (10-1-2 in their past 13 road games).

Both teams enter the game 0-2 against the spread this season. Neither team has been good against the spread recently with Detroit 1-8 against the spread in its last nine games while Tennessee is 0-5 against the spread in its last five games.

The over/under for Sunday’s game is set at 47 points, which may come as a bit of a surprise considering how much the Titans offense has struggled this season. Through two games, Tennessee is averaging 11.5 points per game. The Lions have been a bit better offensively, averaging 23.0 points per game.

The over/under for the game has been set at 44. The Steelers come into Week 3 averaging 23 points per game, scoring 27 against the Jets at home, but being held to just 19 points on the road in Denver.

The over might not be a great option – the line for the over/under is set at 43.5, but three of the last four times these teams have played, they have combined for under 20 points. That said, Buffalo has hit the over in each of its past five outings.

San Diego opened up as a 1 1/2 point favorite over the Falcons, but the early money has leaned heavily towards the Chargers, moving the line to its present state. Both teams are undefeated so far this season, but the Chargers have had the better defense so far this year, giving up just 41 yards rushing and 12 points a game. The Falcons defense on the other hand has given up 22.5 points a game.

The total has moved significantly this week, going from 49 points to 47.5 even though both teams average over 30 points a game. Bettors might think that the Chargers stout defense, plus the Falcons traveling across the country might slow down Matt Ryan and the Atlanta offense.

The Redskins lead the league in scoring average at 34 points a game.

Odds Shark lists the over/under at 46.5.

That number has been incredibly varied around the NFL odds world, with some books putting the Bears as low as a seven-point favorite.

The total for the game opened at 45 points, but has since risen to 46.5 points in most places. The Cowboys rank 29th in the NFL with only 31 points, but rank 11th in yardage with 729.

Two teams facing 0-3 records meet in New Orleans this weekend, and odds are favoring one of them by quite a bit.

Kansas City lost to Atlanta and Buffalo, having given up 75 points in those two contests.

The Panthers kicked off as 3-point underdogs last week against the Saints, so they’re in a familiar position. Bettors should note that the total has gone over in six of the last seven matchups between these teams and seven of the last nine times Carolina has taken the field. This week, the over/under starts at 52 points - a total both teams blew away in their matchups last week.
