Chiefs Vs. Saints, Week 3: New Orleans Defense Off To Historically Poor Start

The New Orleans Saints are off to a rough start in 2012, and at 0-3 need to turn things around sooner rather than later. One reason they have yet to win a game this season is a defense that has provided little resistance to opposing teams.

As SB Nation’s Canal Street Chronicles noted following New Orleans’ 27-24 OT loss to Kansas City, the Saints’ defense is off to the third-worst starts in modern league history:

Through three games, they have given up a total 1,432 yards to their opponents. That puts them behind (barely) the 2006 Houston Texans (1,451) and the 1978 Baltimore Colts (1,452).

As much as it pains me to say it, that sounds about right.

The Saints are last in the league in yards allowed per game and 30th in points allowed per game. They gave up 510 yards and 27 points to the Chiefs.
