Joe Mays wonders how much he’ll be fined for the Matt Schaub ear hit

The Denver LB knows his wallet is about to get lighter after the illegal hit he put on the Texans QB on Sunday.

With the NFL putting an even greater emphasis on QB safety this season, Denver Broncos LB Joe Mays knew almost immediately that the helmet-to-helmet hit he put on Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub was going to cost him money.

However, in an interview with a Denver sports radio station, it didn’t sound like it would cause him to change the way he plays (courtesy of Sports Radio Interviews):

“If you hit him, that let’s you know that you’re going to be there and you’re going to be coming. Not only you, but the rest of your teammates are going to come like that as well. But if you hit him like that, you can also get fined. Who knows how much money they’ll take away from me? When it comes to quarterbacks, they’re definitely going to protect them. I’m waiting to see what’s going to happen to me.”

In essence, Mays is saying that fines like that are the cost of doing business for an aggressive defense. All he can do is charge it to the game and hope that the NFL doesn’t hit his pockets too much.

How big will fines have to get to truly discourage defenders? Apparently much higher.
