NFL fines Kyle Shanahan $25,000, according to report

Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan was fined $25,000 for abrasively confronting the officials last Sunday during a loss to the Bengals, according to Adam Schefter. Shanahan verbally accosted a referee towards the end of the game, drawing a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. He also continued to follow the referees into the tunnel after the conclusion of the game. It was expected that Shanahan would be fined by the league, particularly after Broncos coaches John Fox ($30,000) and Jack Del Rio ($25,000) were handed comparable fines earlier in the week.

The league had sent out a memo to coaches prior to Week 3, requesting that they improve their sideline decorum and not be so aggressively confrontational with the replacement referees. Shanahan was told Monday that he would have his actions reviewed, and he issued an apology stating, “I conducted myself in the wrong way.”

Shanahan, the son of head coach Mike Shanahan, is the first coach to get dinged for his actions in Week 3. But he likely won’t be the last, as Schefter also reported that it’s expected Patriots head coach Bill Belichick will be fined for grabbing an official at the end of Sunday night’s loss in Baltimore.
