Jared Gaither back at left tackle for Chargers

Chargers left tackle Jared Gaither will make his season debut. How will it affect San Diego’s offense?

Chargers starting left tackle Jared Gaither has been out since July with an injured back, but he is officially active and set to start for San Diego in week 4. Most will remember that Gaither was cut from the Chiefs last season after he came in for only one play and had a critical false start, but the Chargers immediately claimed him and then signed him to a four-year contract in the offseason. So far this season, Philip Rivers has been sacked six times, while the running game is averaging 3.9 yards per carry. Gaither, 6'9", was a top college tackle at Maryland but forced to enter the supplemental draft in 2007 because of bad grades. He's been seen as a franchise left tackle at times, but has yet to live up to those expectations on a consistent basis.

Fantasy Take: If Gaither can play like the player that some expected, it's a huge benefit to Rivers, Ryan Mathews, and the rest of the Chargers offense. It's clear that Norv Turner and the organization believe that, but he's going to need to actually show it. If he can, it will increase the value of all Chargers skill players.
