Kellen Winslow Fails Physical With Patriots, Visanthe Shiancoe Placed On IR

Veteran tight end Kellen Winslow failed his physical with the Patriots, who also placed Visanthe Shiancoe on Injured Reserve.

Presswire

Tight end Kellen Winslow failed his physical with the New England Patriots, according to a report from CSN New England's Mary Paoletti. The Seahwaks released Winslow over the holiday weekend and the Patriots promptly brought him in for a workout on Tuesday. But Paoletti reports that his knee, originally injured in an offseason motorcycle accident with the Browns in 2005, did not pass the exam in New England. The knee has been a constant issue for Winslow, who's had multiple reconstructive surgeries and has never been the same player because of the injury.

In addition to the Winslow news, the Patriots also placed tight end Visanthe Shiancoe on short-term injured reserve. This version of the IR allows a player to re-join the team at practice in three weeks and play in games in eight weeks. The Pats signed Michael Hoomanawanui earlier on Wednesday to fill the void made by the corresponding Shiancoe move and to help provide depth behind Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski. Hoomanawanui was signed off the Redskins practice squad, meaning he'll be with the Pats for at least three weeks.
