Cowboys coaching rumors: Dallas interested in Monte Kiffin, according to report

The Cowboys may be looking to bring a big name in to run their defense.

The Dallas Cowboys are interested in Monte Kiffin for their open defensive coordinator position, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Dallas fired Rob Ryan on Tuesday following a season when the Cowboys finished 14th in total yards allowed and gave up 25 points a game.

Kiffin made his name by building one of the NFL's best defenses in Tampa Bay with his famous "Tampa 2" coverage scheme. He spent 12 years with the Buccaneers, helping them move from NFL doormat to Super Bowl champion. Following his time with Tampa Bay, he worked as the defensive coordinator for his son, Lane Kiffin, at college coaching stops in Tennessee and USC.

The “Tampa 2” didn’t have the same success in the college ranks, as practice limitations made it difficult for the complicated system to be implemented. The system was also built to stop pro-style offenses, and struggled against the wider variety in the college game. Getting back to the NFL could be a good thing for Kiffin.

The Kansas City Chiefs also expressed interest in Kiffin, but have since fallen out of the running, according to Chiefs blog Arrowhead Pride.
