Cleveland Browns agree to sell stadium naming rights to FirstEnergy

Cleveland Browns Stadium could have a new name in 2013 as FirstEnergy acquired the naming rights on Monday.

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

After changing front office executives and coaching staffs, even more change will be coming to Cleveland next season. The name of the stadium is likely to change after the Browns agreed to sell the naming rights to Cleveland Browns Stadium to FirstEnergy Corp. on Monday, according to a report from the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

Monday’s deal is just the latest move made by new owner Jimmy Haslam. It should not, however come as a surprise. In August, even before he was officially approved as the owner, Haslam said he would likely explore selling the the naming rights to the stadium.

The deal is yet to be confirmed by either side and even though the terms are still unknown, the deal is likely to bring in at least $1 million a year. According to a report from Bloomberg Businessweek, current NFL stadium naming rights deals range from $900,000 a year up to $16 million a year.
