Bears hire Aaron Kromer as offensive coordinator

The Chicago Bears have hired Aaron Kromer as their offensive coordinator under new head coach Marc Trestman.

On Wednesday, the Chicago Bears announced the hiring of Aaron Kromer as the team's new offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Kromer was previously the offensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints.

Kromer spent the last five years with the Saints, primarily coaching running backs and, most recently, offensive linemen. He also filled in as the interim head coach of the Saints for the first six games of this past season, when Joe Vitt, himself filling in for Sean Payton, was suspended.

Primarily working with offensive linemen during the time, Kromer has 20 years of coaching experience. He spent the 2001-04 seasons with the Oakland Raiders.

As to what this means for the Bears, it does lend some credibility to the thought that Marc Trestman, the team’s new head coach, will likely build the offense and call the plays.

Trestman is known as an offensive guru who works wonders with quarterbacks, and for being incredibly attentive to detail in his gameplans. Bringing in someone like Kromer and giving him the label of offensive line coach on top of his coordinator duties could mean his role will focus more on talent evaluation and preparation, instead of actual scheming and play-calling.

Kromer will take over a talented offense, but one of the league's worst offensive lines. Quarterback Jay Cutler was frequently on his back, getting sacked 44 times and hit 87 times. Only seven quarterbacks were sacked more, and only a few were hit more. It's likely he'll have to reshuffle the line and make it one of his top priorities.
