Panthers reportedly interview Mike Shula for offensive coordinator

The Panthers interviewed their quarterbacks coach and former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Mike Shula for their vacant offensive coordinator position.

Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE

The Carolina Panthers reportedly interviewed quarterbacks coach Mike Shula for the offensive coordinator position left open when Rob Chudzinski was hired as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Shula has been the quarterbacks coach in Carolina for the last two seasons and during Cam Newton's entire tenure with the team.

Shula, 47, is the son of legendary coach Don Shula and brother of Dave Shula, who served as head coach of the Bengals from 1992-1996. He has served several stints as an assistant coach in the NFL and been the quarterbacks coach of three different teams.

Despite his NFL experience, Shula may be best known for his time as the head coach at the University of Alabama. Shula coached the Crimson Tide from 2003-2006 compiling a 26-23 record during his four seasons before being replaced by Nick Saban.

Shula served as a NFL offensive coordinator once before, with the Buccaneers from 1996-99. During that span, Tampa ranked 27th in total offense and 29th in scoring offense.
