Marc Trestman, Jay Cutler and a new era for the Bears

The Chicago Bears introduced new head coach Marc Trestman on Thursday. In his introductory press conference Trestman said he will work closely with Jay Cutler and call the plays in Chicago.

Chicago Bears new head coach Marc Trestman is a true quarterbacks coach. He held his introductory press conference on Thursday and above all else Trestman stressed the importance of the quarterback to the success of a football team. He indicated that he would be working closely with Jay Cutler everyday and said "the quarterback absolutely must play at an efficient level." Trestman also said that he would call the plays for the Bears offense.

Trestman did not call Cutler an elite quarterback, but said he can’t wait to work with Cutler. Trestman went on say that Cutler understands his strengths and weaknesses and loves football. Trestman said it would be his job to improve Cutler’s efficiency and make him a better quarterback. He also said that he is responsible for keeping Cutler and the quarterbacks safe in the pocket.

When it comes to the coaching staff, Trestman confirmed that he would have final say. He said he is going to build a staff of men who are of high character, great teachers, detailed, and organized. He also confirmed that defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli has decided to move on.

As far as his football philosophy, Trestman would not get into too many specifics, but said that he is focused on building a team that is smart, unselfish, tough, physical, and disciplined. The specific gameplans would depend on the talent on the roster, but those were the characteristics he would instill in his team. Trestman wants a locker room full of men who love football and are hard working.

In general, Trestman looked eager for the chance to be a head coach in the NFL and excited to get to work. He actually appeared more comfortable answering questions about football and the Bears than he did in giving his prepared speech.

Trestman was hired after an extensive search by general manager Phil Emery. The Bears interviewed 13 candidates before narrowing it down to three, Trestman, Bruce Arians, and Darrell Bevell. After each of those three had an eight hour interview, Emery said it came down to Trestman or Arians because they both had head coaching experience. Ultimately he decided on Trestman because of a shared connection between the two men and a commitment to excellence.
