Packers unlikely to keep Cedric Benson

The Green Bay Packers will likely cut ties with Cedric Benson after a disappointing season that ended with the running back landing on injured reserve after just five games.

Cedric Benson is not expected to be a member of the Green Bay Packers next season, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The Packers are reportedly looking for a complete, and more importantly healthy, player to man a running attack that struggled last season. Benson was signed last off-season to be that player, but averaged just 3.5 yards per carry for 248 yards before being placed on injured reserve after five games due to a Lisfranc fracture.

The Packers could look to free agency to address their needs, with names like Steven Jackson, Reggie Bush, Felix Jones and Shonn Greene all becoming unrestricted free agents. They may look to the 2013 NFL Draft as well, where there is plenty of young talent.

Ryan Grant may also be heading elsewhere after being signed by the Packers late in the season. Both he and Benson are 30-years-old, which makes a new contract all the more difficult to justify. James Starks may also have trouble staying with the team considering his injury history. DuJuan Harris proved to be a dangerous (albeit small) runner late in the year, and second-year running back Alex Green also has a power-running skill set, potentially making Starks redundant.
