Ryan Pickett expected to remain with Packers

The Green Bay Packers are expected to retain defensive tackle Ryan Pickett, 33, defensive line coach Mike Trgovac said recently. Pickett has helped anchor the Packers’ line since the 2006 season.

Ryan Pickett, despite his relatively advanced 33 years of age, is not expected to be let go by the Green Bay Packers any time soon, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Defensive line coach Mike Trgovac believes that Pickett, who is entering the final year of his contract, has plenty of productivity left in the tank.

“He was able to stay healthy this year. He came into training camp in relatively good shape. He fits our defense very well and takes a lot of pride in what he does. I didn’t see him fall off at all this year. I think he definitely has another good year left in him.”

Pickett had 51 tackles last season, his most since racking up 64 in his first season with the Packers in 2006. With just 9.5 total sacks in his 12-year career, Pickett isn’t known for his pass-rushing ability, but he has been considered at times to be among the league’s better run-stuffers.

With that said, the Packers have a lot of young talent waiting in the wings to potentially push the veteran in a defense that ranked just 17th in the league against the run allowing 118.5 yards per game and 4.5 yards per carry. Rookie Jerel Worthy struggled to make an impact but could regain the form that made him a second-round pick in the offseason. Fourth-round rookie Mike Daniels out of Iowa also showed promised during the season, recording 12 tackles and two sacks.
