Mike Shula promoted to Panthers offensive coordinator, according to report

Shula was hired as quarterbacks coach in 2011 and has worked with Cam Newton for the past two seasons.

Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE

The Carolina Panthers plan to promote from within the organization and will appoint Mike Shula as the offensive coordinator to fill the vacancy left by Rob Chudzinski's departure to Cleveland, according to a report from Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer.

Shula, 47, had offensive coordinator experience with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Tony Dungy before he was fired following the 1999 season when the team lost in the NFC Championship Game. He was a quarterbacks coach for the Dolphins for three seasons before he was named the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

After four seasons at Alabama in which the team posted a 26-23 record, Shula was fired and returned to the NFL as the quarterbacks coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. He joined the Panthers in 2011 as quarterbacks coach and has worked with Cam Newton for two seasons.

Also set to be promoted by the Panthers are Ricky Proehl and Richard Rogers. Proehl played 17 seasons in the NFL before joining the Panthers as an assistant coach in 2011 and will take over as wide receivers coach. Rogers served as the interim special teams coach after Brian Murphy was fired in November and will remain in that role full-time.
