NFL coordinator news: Coaching positions around the league being filled

After the hiring of Mike Shula, Ray Horton and Pep Hamilton, assistant coach positions around the NFL are beginning to get filled.

Now that the NFL’s final open head coach position has been filled, teams have turned to filling out their staffs before the offseason arrives. Here’s how some SB Nation blogs reacted to their team’s hires.

The Indianapolis Colts replaced Bruce Arians with former Stanford offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton.

From Stampede Blue:

Hamilton worked with current Colts players Andrew Luck, Coby Fleener, and Griff Whalen when they were at Stanford together. Prior to the Stanford gig, he was a QB at Howard University from 1993-96 and worked as the Bears QB coach from 2007-09.

The Browns hired Ray Horton as their new defensive coordinator. He was formerly the Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator and reportedly asked the Cardinals to release him when they hired Bruce Arians as their head coach.

From Dawgs By Nature:

Much like getting Norv Turner as an offensive coordinator was a major score, getting Horton for the defensive side of the ball is another big plus to round out Rob Chudzinski's staff. Horton has a great deal of experience working with the secondary, something that was a common attribute for the people they were interested in (Mel Tucker, Raheem Morris, and Horton). Horton was the Bengals' defensive backs coach from 1997-2001, and was the Steelers' secondary coach from 2004-2010.

The Carolina Panthers promoted Mike Shula from the team's quarterbacks coach to the team's offensive coordinator.

From Cat Scratch Reader:

As reported by Joseph Person on Twitter, the Panthers have promoted QB Coach Mike Shula to Offensive Coordinator for the 2013 season. Claiming they wanted to keep continuity with Cam Newton and the offense, the Panthers chose Shula over more qualified candidates Hue Jackson and Pat Shurmur.

There are only a few coordinator positions left vacant in the NFL, just like there are a few candidates that have interviewed and are still looking to change teams or get promoted to offensive or defensive coordinators.
