New Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians is keeping an open mind when it comes to the quarterback situation in the desert.
Bruce Arians open to current QBs, outside options for Cardinals
Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians hasn’t made any decisions regarding Kevin Kolb, Ryan Lindley or John Skelton yet, and plans to evaluate each quarterback in the near future.
Speaking at his introductory press conference, Arians told reporters that two attributes separate quarterbacks in his mind -- “the brain, and the heart.” Arians’ quarterback quotient is dubbed the “quarterback grit,” something that enables the other 52 players on the roster to rally around the starting quarterback.
Arians hasn't made a decision on any of the quarterbacks on Arizona's roster, and plans to evaluate Kevin Kolb, John Skelton and Ryan Lindley in the near future. Arians noted that he's "going to give them all a shot," but if he doesn't believe any of the three possess the skills he looks for in a quarterback, he won't hesitate to look for a better option.
If he doesn’t think any of them are “salvageable,” he said, “We’ll see if there’s a better option at Door Number 2.”
The free agent quarterback pool is quite thin. Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco is ticketed for free agency, but almost certainly will remain in Baltimore with the franchise tag -- assuming a long-term deal isn't reached.
Finding the right quarterback may prove to be difficult for Arians, but Arizona’s new head coach will certainly work relentlessly to find a leader with the “quarterback grit.”
