Keith Armstrong interviewed with Bears, Chiefs for head coach vacancy

Keith Armstrong has already interviewed for the head coach openings with the Chiefs and Bears, according to reports.

Atlanta Falcons' special teams coach Keith Armstrong interviewed for the open head coaching positions with both the Chiefs and Bears, according to a report from Alex Marvez of Fox Sports. Armstrong joined Falcons' offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter as interviewees of the Chiefs, and then also reportedly met with the Bears on New Year's Day. Koetter signed an extension Wednesday to stay on with the Falcons.

Armstrong's name surfaced as a head coaching candidate with the round of firings in the NFL this week, as he has been linked to the Cardinals' opening in addition to the jobs in Chicago and Kansas City. At the NFL level, Armstrong has only been a special teams coach, working in that capacity with the Bears, Dolphins, and now the Falcons. He's been in the Atlanta organization since 2008.

The Chiefs are trying to replace Romeo Crennel, who was expectedly fired early Monday morning. The Bears need to replace Lovie Smith, who’s removal came as more of a surprise on the NFL’s Black Monday. Interviewing Armstrong would also fulfill the Rooney Rule requirement that NFL teams interview a minority candidate for head coaching vacancies.
