Super Bowl 2013: David Akers hopes to remain 49ers kicker

David Akers has struggled lately, but he remains hopeful of having a chance to kick in the Super Bowl.

San Francisco 49ers kicker Davis Akers almost lost his job these past few weeks after the coaching staff decided to bring in Billy Cundiff for a long look. However, Harbaugh showed faith in Akers, waiving Cundiff before this weekend.

Now, Akers is headed to the Super Bowl, but not because of his contributions on Sunday. According to the Sacramento Bee, Akers isn’t sure what happened on his lone field goal attempt of the day.

“If it had been three inches to the right, I would have had a perfect game,” said Akers, who succeeded on his four point-after attempts. “I struck the ball, and it lands on top of the goal post. Figure that one out and let me know.”

“I’m here till they tell me otherwise,” he added.

Akers, 38, has had a tough season, leading the league in missed field goals with 13. He didn't help himself very much on Sunday, clanking a 38-yard field goal off the left upright that would have tied the score in the third quarter against the Atlanta Falcons.

This is clearly a huge problem for the 49ers. The Super Bowl may very well be a close game, and as their opponents, the Baltimore Ravens, found out last year, a good kicker can make all the difference.

Akers was just about automatic in 2011, making an NFL record 44 field goals. However, Akers has been brutal lately, missing at least one field goal in six of his past eight contests.

It will be interesting to see if San Francisco brings in another kicker during this two week layoff to compete once again with the scuffling Akers.
