Super Bowl halftime show 2013: Beyoncé to headline, will be joined by Destiny’s Child

Beyoncé will headline the Super Bowl XLVII halftime show with a live performance from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. She will, however, not be alone -- as she will be joined by two of her former bandmates from the group Destiny’s Child. Beyoncé will reunite with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. It will be the first time the three have performed together as a group since Destiny’s Child disbanded in 2005.

According to a report from BET, Beyoncé will begin the halftime performance solo before she will be joined by Rowland and Williams for a compilation of Destiny’s Child’s top hits. The trio’s performance will conclude with the group’s recently released single “Nuclear.” Following that portion of the performance, Beyoncé will wrap things up with another solo performance including singing a new song from her upcoming solo album.

Which songs Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child perform remains to be seen, but based on recent Super Bowl halftime performances, the entire show is likely to include between four and eight songs. Performances over the last three Super Bowl halftime shows have averaged six songs. Between her time with Destiny’s Child and her solo career, Beyoncé has produced nine songs which have hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart, giving her plenty of options to choose from.

In addition to the guest appearance from the members of Destiny’s Child, fans from around the world will also play a role in the halftime show. Pepsi, the sponsor of the Super Bowl halftime show, is running a contest where fans submit pictures of themselves in various poses. Prior to the beginning of Beyoncé‘s performance, 100 fans will be used in a commercial introducing the Grammy-winning singer.

There is also the possibility of more guest performers. Beyoncé is married to rapper Jay Z, leading some to wonder whether he could also make a guest appearance. Regardless of who appears, Beyoncé and the NFL will hope to break a string of poorly-reviewed halftime performances.

Madonna headlined last year’s Super Bowl halftime show and her performances generated very mixed reviews. Even still, it was an upgrade over the Black Eyed Peas who generated a mostly negative response to their performance during halftime of Super Bowl XLV. No matter how good, or bad the performance is, plenty of viewers are likely to tune in. Last year’s Super Bowl halftime show drew a record audience with an estimated 114 million viewers tuning in.
