Darrelle Revis rumors: Jets owner to explore trade of star cornerback, per report

The New York Jets are going to explore their options around a potential trade of cornerback Darrelle Revis, according to reports.

The Star-Ledger-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Jets and owner Woody Johnson are going to explore their options to potentially trade cornerback Darrelle Revis, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. They're clearly in a transition period, and this angle supports that line of thought.

Revis is due $6 million in 2013 and is signed through the 2014 season. His contract number is actually very reasonable, but the Jets are already in trouble with their salary cap numbers and they may be looking more for a rebuilding effort.

According to La Canfora’s sources, the Jets want to maximize the value they can get for Revis now, and new general manager John Idzik has likely been given the task to get something done.

It’s unlikely that the Jets have the funds to retain Revis with a contract extension, and under his current deal, the team is not allowed to use the franchise tag on him. In short, if there ever was a time to flip Revis, it would be right now. It is worth noting, though, that trading Revis would result in a $3 million penalty, due to some other provisions in his contract.

Obviously, the Jets like Revis as a player. He’s one of the premier corners in the league, and there are definitely some teams with ailing secondaries still out there. It’s unclear what the Jets are looking for in exchange, but it goes without saying that there will be plenty of interested parties, at least initially.
