Darrelle Revis trade rumors: Jets CB responds to speculation

Darrelle Revis responded to trade rumors on Twitter, saying he is “speechless” that talks are even in progress. How will the situation unfold?

Dale Zanine-US PRESSWIRE

Darrelle Revis took to Twitter to respond to trade rumors Thursday, saying he is "speechless" that the New York Jets are reportedly seeking offers for the star cornerback. The Jets could run afoul of the salary cap if they can't find some way to clear space and getting rid of the fan favorite may be the only recourse they have.

Revis didn’t criticize the organization, however, saying later “I guess we’ll see how this plays out.“ While the Jets would no doubt like to keep one of the NFL’s elite defensive backs, there may not be a better time to get something in return. The Jets may not be able to afford to sign Revis to a long-term extension, and his contract stipulates that the team cannot use the franchise tag on him. Plenty of teams around NFL would jump at the chance to acquire Revis, even coming off a torn ACL, and the Jets in turn could use draft picks to address other glaring needs.

Gang Green Nation: Jets would want a first round pick

John Idzik avoided talking about Revis’ contract when he was introduced as the new general manager of the Jets on Thursday. Head coach Rex Ryan has made it clear that he thinks very highly of Revis and would rather retain his services. Owner Woody Johnson has the power to give final say, however.

Revis is owed $6 million in 2013 and is signed through the 2014 season. The Jets would have to eat a $3 million penalty if they do trade Revis.
