Geno Atkins contract: Bengals, player’s agent have ‘brief’ extension discussion

Atkins’ agent spoke with Bengals officials at the Senior Bowl this week about a contract extension for the two-time Pro Bowler.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Geno Atkins is headed to the Pro Bowl for the second consecutive season, and he'll be a free agent following the 2013 season. The team spoke briefly with Pat Dye, Atkins' agent, at the Senior Bowl about a potential new contract.

“We had some dialogue down here,” Dye said. “In an ideal world, both sides would like to get something sooner rather than later. He’s been to two Pro Bowls at age 24, so he’s en elite player at his position. I know they recognize that. It’s just a matter of sitting down and getting it done in a way that that satisfies both sides.”

Atkins is coming off a year in which he recorded a career-high 12.5 sacks, and earned a first-team All-Pro nod for his efforts. He has a total of 23 sacks in his three-year NFL career, and he has also forced six fumbles.

The Bengals are coming off a 10-6 season and their second consecutive playoff appearance -- it was just the third time in the last 10 years that they won 10 games or more in a season.
