Charles Tillman contract: Bears CB in line for a new deal?

After a stellar 2012, Chicago Bears cornerback Charles Tillman could see a new contract that could benefit both the Bears and Tillman in the short-term.

USA TODAY Sports

Chicago Bears cornerback Charles Tillman could be in line for a new contract -- though it's not entirely because of his superb 2012 season.

Brad Briggs of the Chicago Tribune mused about Tillman’s contract on Sulia, wondering if it makes financial sense for the Bears to extend Tillman this offseason -- and consequently, lowering Tillman’s cap number for the 2013 season.

He is due to earn a base salary of $7.95 million in 2013 with a workout bonus of $50,000 making his total cash value and cap number an even $8 million. The Bears could potentially lower that cap number by extending Tillman. The question is what kind of value will the club place on him moving forward and what kind of value does he place on himself?

Tillman had another excellent season in 2012, and will once again play in the Pro Bowl. Tillman appeared in all 16 of Chicago’s games for the third consecutive season, recording 85 tackles and three interceptions, while forcing a staggering 10 fumbles. Tillman also had three defensive touchdowns in 2012, giving him five in the last two seasons.

Tillman’s contract is set to expire after the 2013 season, making him a free agent next year. As Briggs pointed out, the Bears could lower his cap number in 2013 while keeping him off the market next year, but everything hinges on whether or not the Bears and Tillman see eye-to-eye on his value going forward. Tillman will be 32 at the start of the 2013 season.

The Bears currently have $13.3 million dollars of cap space to work with this offseason.
