Dolphins, Jake Long could go separate ways

Former No. 1 overall pick Jake Long could part ways with the Miami Dolphins this offseason, as the left tackle is ticketed for free agency -- and could be too expensive for Miami to afford.

Former No. 1 overall pick Jake Long's time as a member of the Miami Dolphins could be up.

Long, who is ticketed for free agency this offseason, was selected with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2008 NFL Draft, and was named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first four NFL seasons. Long was named a second-team All-Pro in 2009 and a first-team All-Pro in 2010.

Despite the successful start to his career, the Dolphins might find themselves parting ways with their former No. 1 overall pick. ESPN’s James Walker believes that Long will play for another team in 2013 -- unless he’s willing to take a hometown discount to remain in Miami.

I think Long is long gone in Miami unless he takes a home-team discount. Despite his drop in play the past two seasons, Long is still better than a majority of left tackles, and that will be enough to make Long one of the NFL’s highest-paid lineman.

Walker believes that since Long is in decline, it’s unwise for the Dolphins to hand out a rich, long-term contract, since the Dolphins would be paying for what Long has previously done -- and not what he will do in the future.

Miami has other needs that need to be addressed this offseason -- including giving quarterback Ryan Tannehill more help offensively, as well as defensively, in the secondary.
