Jon Gruden to Cowboys rumors ‘ridiculous,’ according to report

Three key assistants from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Super Bowl-winning 2002 team are now on the Cowboys staff. Just don’t expect Jon Gruden to join them any time soon.

USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys have been busy in recent weeks overhauling the coaching staff under head coach Jason Garrett. But Jon Gruden isn't going to join the cast of characters in any capacity, according to the latest report out of Dallas.

The hires of new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, defensive line coach Rod Marinelli and special teams coach Rich Bisaccia -- all of whom spent time together with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during Jon Gruden's run in Tampa -- started the rumor mill, but ESPN's Ed Werder was quick to dismiss those rumors, saying a team source called the idea "ridiculous."

Bisaccia's hire was especially eye-turning, as the former Buccaneers special teams coach had agreed to take the same position with the Auburn Tigers just 22 days before agreeing to join the Cowboys staff. Bisaccia served as special teams coach with the Buccaneers between 2002 and 2010, winning a Super Bowl with the team in his first season.

Kiffin famously engineered the “Tampa 2” defensive scheme that helped the Buccaneers defense rise to the top of the league in the years surrounding the Super Bowl win, while Marinelli was with the Bucs from 2002 to 2005.
