Saints sign GM Mickey Loomis to extension

The New Orleans Saints have locked up general manager Mickey Loomis for the next five years.

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Saints have made a move for front-office stability, signing general manager Mickey Loomis to a five-year contract extension, according to Chris Wesseling of NFL.com. The stability in the general manager/head coach dynamic is now locked in, as the Saints re-signed Sean Payton for five years in late December.

It’s a significant move, as the Saints have been marred by instability thanks to the bounty scandal that saw multiple coaches suspended for all or a portion of this past season. Many were wondering if the Saints would be able to get both guys under contract for the future after all of the events that transpired.

Payton had a contract voided by the NFL in September 2011, due to a clause that said Payton could opt out of his contract if Loomis was ever fired or suspended. This pre-dated the bounty scandal hitting its stride, and the NFL was concerned with that clause specifically.

Now that Payton has been re-instated by the league and his five-year contract approved, the team was free to work on Loomis.

Loomis and Payton combined for the Saints' only Super Bowl title, when the team took Super Bowl XLIV in 2009. Both men are now under contract through the 2017 season, and can focus on attaining some much-needed stability, starting with the 2013 season.
