The St. Louis Rams are not going to make Rob Ryan their new defensive coordinator after all, according to a Tweet from the team. The official Twitter account says that the Rams and Ryan agreed that he was "not the right fit for the DC position," after "extensive conversations."

The St. Louis Rams will not make Rob Ryan their new defensive coordinator, according to a statement from the team on Tuesday.

It was initially reported that the two sides had reached an agreement back on Jan. 12, but things went quiet for more than a week. Finally, on Jan. 24, ESPN reported, citing an inside source, that the Rams had hired Ryan.
Presumably, the Rams have had Ryan as one of their top choices, or perhaps their only choice, since the initial report, and have been talking scheme and defensive philosophy with him since then. It’s unclear if there really was some sort of breakthrough on Jan. 24 or not, but this Tweet from the team has officially extinguished the potential hire.
Ryan was fired as defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys on Jan. 8, after the team went 8-8 and missed the playoffs again. Ryan said that he would be out of work "for like five minutes," after being sacked.
Using 11:30 a.m. ET Tuesday as the measuring stick, Ryan will have been out of work for 29,916 minutes. Given that Ryan used the word “like” in the original quote, he did give himself a little leeway, and it’s likely he’ll claim it was around 30,000 minutes worth of leeway, at that.
The Rams followed up with another Tweet, saying that the team will continue the interview process with other candidates for the still-vacant defensive coordinator position, so Ryan wasn’t necessarily passed up for someone that St. Louis already had in mind.
