Chris Culliver releases statement following anti-gay remarks

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver raised eyebrows with his remarks on Tuesday, which stated that any gay teammates would not be welcome in his locker room. On Wednesday, the 49ers released a statement "rejecting" Culliver's comments.

Later on Wednesday, Culliver released his own statement, which was relayed by Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated:

“The derogatory comments I made yesterday were a reflection of thoughts in my head, but they are not how I feel. It has taken me seeing them in print to realize that they are hurtful and ugly. Those discriminating feelings are truly not in my heart. Further, I apologize to those who I have hurt and offended, and I pledge to learn and grow from this experience.”

Obviously this is not at all the type of exposure that the 49ers were looking for in the week leading up to the Super Bowl, let alone to come out on Media Day when the sports news world is actively looking for sound bites from players.

Culliver was drafted by the 49ers in 2011 out of South Carolina. He has three interceptions and 82 tackles in his NFL career.
