NFLPA asks Chargers to replace team doctor David Chao

San Diego players are done with Chargers doctor David Chao, who has a controversial history.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The NFL Players' Association has asked the San Diego Chargers to replace team doctor David Chao, according to Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego. Chao specializes in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, and he has come under fire in the past for negligence, coming close to having his license revoked.

Chao was at the center of an NFLPA presentation that quoted a survey saying 78 percent of NFL players do not trust their team doctor. The Chargers would have good reason to be wary of Chao, as he has had his share of legal trouble in the past.

The California medical board sought to revoke Chao’s license in 2012, according to the USA Today. The board had evidence that the doctor had committed gross negligence on multiple occasions. Chao was the target of a medical fraud suit in 2006, stemming from his mishandling of a patient in 2003. He lost that suit, and the plaintiff was awarded $7.5 million in damages.

His sports medicine business website prominently advertises his job as San Diego’s team doctor, so it is likely that Chao receives great benefit beyond his salary due to his position with the Chargers.
