Browns coaching search: Jon Gruden could be on Cleveland’s radar

After failing to lure Chip Kelly away from Oregon, the Cleveland Browns could turn their attention to Jon Gruden, as the they continue to search for their next head coach.

After failing to lure Oregon Ducks head coach Chip Kelly away from his job in college football, the Cleveland Browns could decide to pursue another high profile coach -- ESPN's Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden.

Gruden last served as a head coach in 2008, when he was at the helm of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gruden was fired in 2009 after seven seasons in Tampa Bay, when the Buccaneers went winless in December, finished the season 9-7, and consequently missed the playoffs.

Though he was fired, Gruden's tenure in Tampa Bay was successful. Gruden's Buccaneers defeated the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII, and made the playoffs in three of Gruden's seven seasons as head coach.

Prior to serving as Tampa Bay’s head coach, Gruden was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders. Gruden spent four years in Oakland, going 8-8 in his first two seasons, but then led Oakland to back-to-back playoff appearances in 2000 and 2001.

Per Mary Kay Cabot, Gruden has ties to Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslam, from Gruden’s time as a graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee between 1985-86.

Gruden has served as ESPN’s color commentator on Monday Night Football since the 2009 season.

It’s unknown how much interest Gruden would have in coaching the Browns, but it appears that the Browns have interest in attempting to lure the Super Bowl winning coach back to the sidelines.
