2012 NFL season stats, records, news and notes

Records were set, points were scored and plenty of other unusual things happened during the 2012 NFL regular season. We took a closer look at a few of the more notable statistical oddities.

The 2012 NFL regular season is in the books and over the course of 512 games plenty of unusual things occurred. From rookie quarterbacks to record breaking seasons, SB Nation’s Brad Newberg took a closer look at some of the more noteworthy statistical oddities from the regular season.

The rookie quarterbacks were one of the biggest stories of the season and for good reason. Not only did the 2012 rookie crop of quarterbacks more than double the previous record for wins in a season, but Russell Wilson and Robert Griffin III also became the first rookie quarterbacks to finish a season with a passer rating above 100.

It was more than just the quarterbacks posting big numbers, however, as Calvin Johnson shattered the single-season receiving record. While Johnson posted huge receiving numbers, several teams turned to the ground game. Seattle, Minnesota and Washington all averaged more than 160 rushing yards per game, the first time in 25 years three teams have done so in a season. Teams combined to average 45.5 points per game this season, the highest average in 47 seasons.

And that is just the start of it.
